Tyrrell Family History
Johanna remembers living in the Flatbush section of Brooklyn, NY near Ebbets Field. Ebbets Field was torn down in 1960 but above is a picture of it when it was still standing.
Records for Johanna’s ancestors start with her G2 Great Grandfather William Tyrrell born about 1827 in Inchicore, Ireland. It should be noted that Tyrrell is a very common name in Ireland and there are many records with the same first and last names. This is also true of many of her ancestors who immigrated to Glasgow, Scotland and the United States. Identifying the correct records was a difficult task.
INCHICORE
Inchicore is a suburb of Dublin, Ireland. It used to be the marshland where sheep were grazed be
fore being driven to market in Dublin city. Its name comes from the Irish Inse Chór, ‘Sheep Island’.
But the arrival of the railway in the nineteenth century changed all that. The area’s geography made it a useful place for the Great Southern and Western Railway to build its works – which meant houses for workers, and infrastructure to support them. As the railway grew, so did Inchicore.
By the 20th century, Inchicore had become part of Dublin city proper. A village centre grew at the junction of Emmet Road and Tyrconnell Road, with housing all around it. Some of the oldest homes in the area are in the walled CIE estate next to the railway works, while housing south towards the Grand Canal tends to be a little newer.
Inchicore today runs along the river Camac, between the Liffey and the Grand Canal. It is bordered to the east by Kilmainham, to the south by Drimnagh, and to the north and west by Ballyfermot and Cherry Orchard.
William first married Margaret Rourke (O’Rourke?) in 1853 in Finglas, Ireland. They had 2 children which included Johanna’s Great Grandfather Patrick Tyrrell. Margaret died 1875 in Goldenbridge, Ireland from cancer of the uterus.
William then married Anna Daverne on an unknown date and in an unknown place. It is believed that Anna was from France. William and Anna had 2 children. William died 1887 in Goldenbridge, Ireland
Johanna’s Great Grandfather was Patrick Tyrrell who was born 1859 in Dublin, Ireland and died in 1895 in Glasgow, Scotland. Patrick married Mary Ann McGarry in 1882 in Glasgow, Scotland. They had 7 children including Johanna’s Grandfather Robert Patrick Tyrrell. Mary Ann died from Nephritis in 1909. She died on the same day as her son John who committed suicide.
Robert Patrick was born in 1890 in Glasgow, Scotland and died in 1964 in New York.
It should be noted that Johanna’s ancestors had 2 immigrations. One from Ireland to Scotland and another from Scotland to
New York. Robert Patrick married Margaret Straiton in 1914 in Manhattan, NY. Margaret was born 1893 in Glasgow, Scotland and died in 1940 in Yonkers, NY. Robert Patrick and Margaret had 3 children including Johanna’s father Robert William Tyrrell. After Margaret died Robert Patrick married someone by the name of Sally.
Robert William (Bob) Tyrrell was born in 1917 in Bronx, NY. Bob first married Eileen Scanlan on an unknown date and in an unknown location. Bob and Eileen had one child.
Bob then married Alice Frey. Bob and Alice had 3 children Johanna, Margaret and Robert.

Johanna, Meg and Bob have some famous entertainers as relatives. William T. Quinn is their 1st cousin once removed and was a very famous face on Television in the 1960’s, 1970’s and 1980’s. Perhaps even more well-known Bob Newhart, the entertainer, is the husband of their 2nd cousin.
